Dear Brother Priest,

In recent days, more information has come to light in the media concerning allegations of child sexual abuse and other improper conduct involving our former Archbishop, Cardinal Theodore McCarrick.  With this news we renew our commitment to respond to anyone alleging abuse or harassment by a member of the Church, and to follow our longstanding Child Protection Policy by reporting to the civil authorities any such allegation.  We are reminded as well that our first obligation is to the survivors and to respond spiritually and pastorally to their needs.

Recently, I replied on behalf of all of us to a media request seeking comment on a story reported in the New York Times, pointing out that the Archdiocese of Washington takes all allegations of abuse seriously and our statement went on to say: “we remain committed to following our long-standing child protection policy that mandates immediate reporting of claims of abuse to the authorities and the immediate removal of an individual from work or ministry following a credible allegation. As this claim did not occur in the Archdiocese of Washington, we decline further comment on the allegation reported in the news yesterday. We encourage anyone who becomes aware of improper conduct by a person involved in archdiocesan ministry to contact the archdiocese.”

In this time of great difficulty for everyone involved, we need, once again, to recommit ourselves to prayer for all those affected by this tragedy.

Asking God’s blessings on your ministry, I am

Faithfully in Christ,

Cardinal Donald Wuerl

Archbishop of Washington
